If you’re still a beginner at the whole fitness thing, whether you’re on the thinner side and looking to gain muscle or you’re overweight and want to lose fat, getting in shape can seem like a lofty goal.
There’s a lot to keep track of: calories, macronutrients, food choices, setting up a proper workout plan, consistently getting to the gym, training intensity, monitoring progress, supplements – it can feel overwhelming at the start.
But keep in mind that by going through that initial grind, learning about your body, building up the proper habits and achieving some initial muscle building and fat burning results, you’re literally setting yourself up for an entire lifetime of benefits.
If you’re getting the right information, it typically takes about a year or two to make training a normal part of life and nutrition something that is mostly automatic and that you don’t have to think too much about.
If you go about things properly, you should be able to gain roughly 50% of the total muscle mass you’re ever going to build in the first year alone, and then another 25% in the second year, so you can make a very solid transformation within two years if you stay consistent. Considering your life as a whole, that’s really not a long time.
In addition, maintaining your physique is a lot easier than building it from the ground up, not only because you have the right habits in place but because it doesn’t require as heavy of a training stimulus to keep your existing muscle intact than it did to build it in the first place.
So once you’ve achieved a physique that you’re happy with, you can be looser with your training, and then because of muscle memory, if you do to go off the rails a bit at some point, you’ll be able to rebuild any muscle you might lose at a much faster pace.
Understand that there is a huge lifelong return on investment from just buckling down and putting in the work for the first one to two years with your fitness program.
Even though it might seem challenging, if you can grind through, stick to your training and nutrition, and continue to expand your knowledge, it will massively benefit you for the rest of your life.
After those first couple years, you’ll always be in shape and have a body you’re happy with, you’ll be healthier, you’ll be more confident and you’ll have the knowledge to easily get back in shape if you do fall off track.
