Are Weight Lifting Straps Useful? (How To Use Lifting Straps)
Are weight lifting straps good to include as part of your bodybuilding routine, or should wrist straps be avoided?
To start with, what are weight lifting straps? These are basically just a set of thick straps that are wrapped around your wrists and then wrapped about the barbell or dumbbell handle. This allows you to grip the weight more tightly and removes your grip and forearms from the equation so that you can more easily hold onto heavier weights.
The issue of how to use lifting straps is very simple, but the question is, should you use them?
First off is the situation where the use of wrist straps is basically mandatory, and that is for any lift where the weight is so heavy that you can't hold onto it for the entire set and are forced to let go. For example, deadlifts or shrugs. In this case, lifting straps help immensely and are critical to ensure that you properly stimulate your targeted muscles.
The second situation is where weight lifting straps are optional, and that is for all of your compound pulling exercises for back. Lifting straps are useful here because they allow you to forget about your grip completely and just focus 100% on pulling the weight through your elbows in order to maximize back stimulation.
I personally use weight lifting straps for all back exercises and think they work well for most people assuming that your goal is hypertrophy.
Some people argue against lifting straps by saying that it's "cheating" and that they will negatively affect the development of your grip strength, but if the central goal is muscle growth then this really shouldn't be an issue. Besides, you can simply incorporate separate grip exercises into your plan if you really want to.
So, are lifting straps useful, and do they really help? If your central goal is to build muscle, then yes, I believe they are a useful lifting tool for most people.
