*ABOUT THIS FILM*

Pin feathers
These waxy kingfisher feather 'cuticles' look spikey but are in fact soft to touch.
Feathers
Shortly before the chick fledges the tips of these pins drop off and the brilliant blue feathers underneath unfurl. Kingfishers keep their pins longer than many other birds because they help keep the chick feathers from becoming clogged by the mess and dirty inside their underground nests.
Kingfisher nest
This kingfisher nest was filmed using cameras hidden inside an artificial nest.
