IPBio project snippet: Fish Inventory

Fish inventory is a seasonal project (Summer) that aims to determine the species diversity and composition of fish and establish water profiles of the Betary River. Species diversity and composition are accomplished by catching and identifying fish using scientific nomenclature, rather than local names, in three habitats within the river; the run, riffle and pool. Water profiles are created in each habitat by measuring the water depth, water velocity at the surface and the grain size of sediment on the river bed in 10x20m transects. Volunteers participate in data collection by taking all water profile measurements in the morning and catching fish in the afternoon. This is carried out using two methods, by overturning rocks in front of a large net in the riffle and run, and searching for fish using a sieve/net in the pool. The fish are taken back to the laboratory to measure, identify and photograph with the help of a local biologist, Henrique Domingues, who explains identification techniques and imparts his knowledge from years of experience in the field. Volunteers are fully immersed in the river for the day, sometimes up to their neck in water to ensure all depth measurements are collected properly. Interacting with fish and becoming familiar with local species is a fantastic opportunity for hands-on experience with wildlife and everyone has a fantastic time cooling off in the river during a hot tropical day.
