IPBio project snippet: Habitat Monitoring

Habitat monitoring is a year-round project that aims to define a “good level of biodiversity”, use ponds to understand ecological well-beings and use macroinvertebrates (tiny bugs) and macrophytes (aquatic plants) to understand trends, changes and implications of climate change on eco-systems. This is achieved by measuring water profile and chemistry parameters, observing the macrophyte composition at the surface and catching macroinvertebrates in corresponding microhabitats. There are four ponds in the reserve where data is collected each month to determine seasonal trends and allow sufficient recovery time. Volunteers are involved in measuring water chemistry by performing various on-site chemical tests. A good old-fashioned measuring tape and ball on a string are used to measure pond dimensions and a detailed map of aquatic surface plants is completed to indicate the areas in which the macroinvertebrate catching shall be carried out. The collected material is taken back to the lab to find and identify macroinvertebrates using identification keys; the timer is on for two hours or until 150 organisms are found. This project gives the volunteers the opportunity to partake in more practical science data collection by performing chemistry tests and identifying creatures by working through identification keys. It is interesting to observe the differences in creatures found during different weather conditions and at each of the ponds.
