IPBio project snippet: Mushroom Inventory

Fungi are now recognized as being integral to forest ecosystems, but are still very understudied, especially in tropical areas where diversity is high. The mushroom inventory aims to catalog the local fungal diversity and understand the growth patterns of these fungi. Each week, six forest plots are searched for mushrooms, collecting data on number of species, colonies and total fruiting bodies as well as what substrates they are growing on. With this weekly data, we can look at seasonal patterns, and the weather conditions that influence their fruiting. Mushrooms found during the inventory that haven’t been cataloged before are collected for identification, photographing and then taken into the dark to test for fluorescence or bioluminescence. Since 2019, over 500 different mushroom species have been found and cataloged, including a few bioluminescent species. To help understand the ecology of the mushrooms on our plots, each year a tree inventory is done as well as a downed woody debris inventory on each plot.
