Seattle Public Schools could close more than 25% of its elementary schools

There are plenty of shocked, frustrated, and anxious Seattle Public Schools parents and students after the school board approved a proposal to close up to 20 elementary schools Wednesday as a way to help balance a budget that’s $105 million short.

SPS Superintendent Dr. Brent Jones told school board members at Wednesday night’s meeting that “this is an opportunity for us to consolidate our effort so that we can be more efficient so we can have the right adults in buildings doing the services and programs that our students need and deserve.”

But nobody wants to see their neighborhood school close—not teachers, parents, or students.
