Rusty Stuck Handcranked Grinder Restoration - with firework! | Mister Patina

In this Video i restored an old rusty stuck handcranked grinder. The grinder was very rusted, the grinding stone was missing, the metal support for grinding was missing and the screw to connect it to a table was broke. In the first inspection i noticed that the grinding mechanism was stuck. Time to disassemble this rusty grinder!
The disassembly was a little tricky because of all the rust. The grinding stone spacers were very rusted and stuck to the shaft. After disassembly i gave all the rusted and greased parts a nice bath in gasoline and degreaser. The next step was sandblasting the rusty parts in the sandblasting cabinet, some other parts (gears, shafts etc.) got just wirebrushed because i didnt want to harm the surfaces with the sandblaster. After those processes the parts were rustfree and free of all grease. I put all metal shafts and the wooden handle on the lathe mill, for getting them clean with scotch brite. Scotch brite doesnt really harm the metal and surfaces of the shafts. The wooden handle had a bad fit with its shaft, so i put them in the lathe together and gave them a nice fit. The next big step was to restore the main metal body. A big part of the restoration was filing away those casting marks and cleaning the surface with body filler. I filled every bigger area of the metal part with body filler and sanded it down again to make sure the surfaces are very smooth. Next step was to give the rusty handcranked grinder a nice paintjob. For the paintjob i chose Patina Green and gave the stuck grinder a complete new paintjob, including a primer, the paint and a clear coat. While the paintjob dries, i had time to restore the small parts (screws, bolts, pins etc.). I cleaned and sanded them, and gave them a nice polishing for a good finish. All parts restored now, so it was time to reassemble the handcranked grinder. Every part got a good load of grease out of "Not terrible restorations - by Dr. Beer"'s grease gun. After everything was reassembled and the handcranked grinder restoration was mostly done, i added a mostly new grinding stone before the final test. In the final test i had a unpointed punch, which got repointed on the handcranked grinder, which isnt stuck anymore and works out very well. End of the story: The very rusted stuck handcranked grinder became a new looking well working handcranked grinder!
