Great RUNNING Form VS Great SPRINTING Form

Super slow motion video showing the difference between great running form and great sprinting form. Top athlete is Ryan Birkmeier, 800m (1:48) and 1500m (3:47) runner at CSU. Bottom athlete is Azeem Fahmi 60m (6.62) and 100m (10.09) sprinter at Auburn.

Here are some of the key difference in sprinting technique vs running:

Sprinters maximize their mechanics for force application. Distance runners maximize for efficiency.

Foot Strike: Sprinter’s foot strike is forefoot, distance runner’s is mid foot. Distance runner’s foot lands more gently.

Ground Contact Time: The sprinter’s foot is on the ground for less time (approximately 90 milliseconds vs. 130 milliseconds).

Stride Length: Distance runner’s stride length is shorter with the sprinter spending more time in the air = longer stride length.

Knee Drive: Sprinter’s knee drive is higher, engaging the hip flexor more to produce greater force into the ground.

Landing Leg Give: The sprinter lands with a stiffer leg to explode off the ground. The distance runner’s knee gives more when it lands to absorb the force.

Body Lean: Sprinter's have a great body lean vs endurance runners.
