Clamps, Clamps, and MORE Clamps!
It's time to get a grip (I had to do it) on my CNC work holding situation with the Shapeoko 3 XL! I've had my Shapeoko for about six months. Still, up until now, I have been using primarily carpet tape or Nitto Permacel tape for holding material to my wasteboard. It's time to make some clamps!
After doing some research, I decided on three main types of clamps I will be building for my initial set. In Fusion 360, I designed two kinds of corner squares, one with slots for the round stock and another with fixed holes for square stock. I also created a hold-down clamp to apply vertical pressure to the material. It contains a 9mm hole to accept a 1/4-20 threaded brass insert actings as a screw jack. Lastly, I designed a pair of small and large cam clamps to apply side pressure to materials. With this primary set, I should have a way to hold down most materials for cutting on my Shapeoko.
I used Carbide Create to layout the clamps on a single sheet of 1/2in MDF and create the tool paths and GCode. I will provide a link below to the files if you want to make this clamp set.
My machine's wasteboard has 1/4-20 threaded brass inserts spaced in a grid at 100mm and 50mm. I had a choice when making the wasteboard of using either Imperial or Metric brass inserts. Still, I chose the Imperial 1/4-20 inserts because I have a big bin of unneeded 1/4-20 carriage bolts. However, I will need a thumb screw knob with a cap to capture the carriage bolt to make it useful, so I came up with a design in Fusion 360 (Thingiverse link below) and printed the knobs and caps Prusa i3 MK3S.
Finally, I have a drawer below the Shapeoko that is perfect for storing this clamp set, but I want to keep it organized, so I created and cut a tray from 1/2in MDF that contains pockets for all the goodies.
I will be putting this clamp set to use on future projects so subscribe to this channel for future CNC projects!
