90W Laser Cutter From Scratch | Fine-Tuning & Testing
In this video, I demonstrate all the tests I performed while fine-tuning and adjusting my Y-400 laser cutter. There is a lot of information in this video, so pause the video or rewind and watch again if you miss something! If you have any questions about any of the tests, leave a comment below.
The test files I used are linked below. If you use the files, I provide below, make sure to adjust parameters accordingly for your laser tube wattage!
A couple of notes about the tests:
-- The laser pointer shown in the third mirror adjustment section is the "Co2 Laser Alignment Tool" from American Photonics (link below; not sponsored). Mine was the 24mm version for a C Series laser head. Check out their videos for more info!
-- You could use the LED pointer alignment tool to align all the mirrors, but since I have already aligned mirror one and two, I just used it to align mirror three.
- Theoretically (or rather mathematically), the step length for the X and Y axis SHOULD be 9.375 with the 30 tooth pulleys on the X and Y axis. Your number should be close to the theoretical number but different due to variances such as belt tightness. More info: https://forum.lightburnsoftware.com/t/how-to-calibrate-ruida-rd6445/13566/4
-- In the Z step length test, I used the bottom of the X rails as a reference. Hard to tell because I couldn't get a great camera angle.
-- I adjusted the 100mm and 200mm offset a bit more after what is shown in the scan test.
-- The idea for the kerf test came from this post: https://community.glowforge.com/t/howto-kerf-measurement-and-jig/26456.
-- I forgot to flip the last "B" in the kerf test. Oops.
-- I noticed while editing that the Z-axis moved while the kerf test was running. I had an unnecessary Z offset set on one of the layers.
