3D Printing A Magnetic Chess Set
Mr. O'Malley and I watched the Queen's Gambit series on Netflix recently, and he decided to challenge his hoomin to a match. As I didn't own a chess set, I decided to design a 3D printable chess set from scratch in Fusion 360!
I started designing in Affinity Designer and drew vectors for one half of each chess piece before mirroring. The knight was the most work since I had to start with a pedestal and sketch a horse head.
After the vector design was in place, I imported the vectors as SVG's into Fusion 360 and used a revolve to bring them into 3D. Again, the knight a bit more effort since I had to do it in two parts. I first created the pedestal in 3D and then made a new sketch and added the head. I created a cavity in each base to accept a 3mm x 2mm round magnet.
Modeling the board was more straightforward. I created a 50mm x 50mm square with an included cavity for the same magnets used in the chess pieces. I then made four corners and used a different body for the letters with a 0.2mm extrude depth. This way, I can print the letters and main body separately. More on this later.
I used a couple of cool 3D printing tricks to print the parts for this build. I added a color change in Prusa Slicr for the chess pieces and board squares. This trick allows the printer to stop at just the right time to add the magnets. I first printed the letters and numbers in one color for the board corners before switching the color and starting the second print without clearing the build plate. This trick allows for two or more color prints on the first layer! After printing all the parts, it was just a matter of assembling them using the dogbone shaped keys.
I'm happy with the final result! Now I need to figure out how to beat Mr. O'Malley at chess! :)
