The lines in Chekhov are often secondary to the LIFE of the scene. Scenes in Chekhov's plays are almost never about face-to-face conversations -- they are randomly important & unimportant exchanges that happen while people are in the midst of doing everyday things. Using the frame of the Yelena / Sonya scene from UNCLE VANYA, I give 6 guidelines for approaching Chekhov scenes as "life" rather than "talk."
