Test Your Knowledge! - The Great Lakes Ship Horn Quiz

Here's a (hopefully) fun little diversion from the typical videos I upload. I've created this quiz for viewers to try to match the ship with the horn. There are 15 different horns in total to guess. At the end you can compare your score with the rankings I've provided. You are also encouraged to share your results in the comments section!

I made sure to pick some horns for this quiz that have very distinctive sounds and tones. Of the four possible answers provided for each question, there is only one possible answer... as the other ships do not have the same horn or same tone. I've included a few easy ones, a few moderately difficult ones, and a couple that maybe only a seasoned "boatnerd" will identify. All horns provided are the current horns on these ships at the time of making this video (August 2023). Ship horns can and do change over time!

For those not familiar, Great Lakes freighters will often give a horn salute when entering and exiting the harbor as a friendly greeting to onlookers or to the lift bridge operator. A salute of one long and two short blasts is known as a captain's salute. Three long and two short blasts is known as a master salute. Both are variations of the same thing and it's up to the captain to decide which salute to use, assuming they choose to salute at all!
