The Boy Who NEVER Touched Another Person
David Phillip Vetter was born on September 21, 1971, in Houston,Texas, with Severe Combined Immunodeficiency — a condition that left him with no functioning immune system whatsoever. Any germ, any bacteria, any virus could be life threatening. Doctors placed him inside a sterile plastic bubble at Texas Children's Hospital within seconds of his birth.
David grew up inside the bubble. He attended school through a telephone connection. He watched the world through plastic walls. NASA built him a specially designed isolation suit so he could occasionally walk outside, but he was never truly free. He could never be touched by another person's bare hands.
When David was 12, doctors performed a bone marrow transplant from his sister Katherine hoping to give him an immune system. The transplant appeared to succeed. But Katherine's marrow carried a dormant Epstein-Barr virus that triggered lymphoma in David's unprotected body. He died on February 22, 1984. He had lived 12 years and 15 days. He never once felt the wind on his skin.
