A PROTON BEAM Left Him Looking Like Two People
Anatoli Bugorski survived a massive proton beam accident.
On July 13, 1978, Soviet physicist Anatoli Bugorski was performing maintenance checks at the U-70 synchrotron in Protvino, Russia. A safety interlock mechanism failed as he leaned over the equipment. A proton beam travelling at near the speed of light entered through the back of his skull, passed through his brain, and exited through his nose. It carried seventy-six billion electron volts of energy.
Bugorski reported seeing a flash brighter than a thousand suns. He felt no pain. In the hours following the accident, the left side of his face swelled severely and the skin at the entry and exit points burned away. Physicians expected him to die. He did not.
The radiation damaged the facial nerve on the left side of his head, causing permanent partial paralysis of that half of his face. Over the following decades, the right side of his face aged normally. The left side did not age. His intellect remained intact. He completed his doctoral degree and continued working as a physicist. The Soviet government classified the incident. It was not known outside the USSR until after its dissolution.
He is reportedly still alive.
