She Fell From A Plane Into The Amazon And WALKED Out

On December 24, 1971, LANSA Flight 508 departed Lima, Peru for Pucallpa. The aircraft entered a severe electrical storm over the Peruvian Amazon and broke apart at altitude. All ninety-one other passengers and crew members died. Juliane Koepcke, seventeen years old, fell approximately three kilometres still strapped to her seat. The dense forest canopy slowed her descent. She survived.

Alone in the Amazon with a broken collarbone, cuts, and a wound in her arm that became infested with maggots, Koepcke used knowledge her biologist parents had taught her during years at their Amazon research station. She found a stream. She followed rivers downstream, knowing they lead to human settlements. She walked for eleven days. When she could no longer reach the wound herself, she poured petrol from an abandoned outboard motor over it and removed the maggots by hand.

On January 3, 1972, she reached a shelter used by loggers and was found and transported to safety. She later became a scientist. Werner Herzog made a documentary about her survival called Wings of Hope.
