What Is The BEST Rep Range For Older Men?
Today I want to answer the question that some of you might be asking, what is the right rep range for us older guys? There are different groups that are going to have different rep ranges. So, let’s dive in to talk about what are the best rep ranges for different groups.
The rep range to build the most muscle is 8-12 reps. I will never recommend doing only 3-4 reps in a set. If the weight is so heavy that you can only do 3-4 reps then you need to lower the weight. That puts a ton of stress on your muscles, joint, and ligaments. If you are someone in your 40’s or older, you want to avoid that. It is different than if you were in your 20’s.
For guys that are not in great shape, maybe you’re lifting for the first time… what is the best rep range for you? I recommend you doing 15-20 reps because you are more interested in burning fat and building muscle. If you do 15-20 reps for your whole workout, you are going to create an EPOC effect. So, you are going to be burning calories and burning fat even when you are done with your workout. Use light enough weight to utilize good form while doing the 15-20 reps.
Now, let’s cover guys who are in pretty good shape. You may have some injuries, aches and pains. Listen to your body and adjust your workouts as to how your body feels. Using lighter weight and doing 8-12 reps is good range. Sometimes you need to rest and it isn’t necessarily because your muscles are tired… but your joints hurt. If you have tendonitis, I found that resting 2-3 minutes between sets eliminates that pain.
Now, if you are trying to lose a lot of weight..resting a long period of time between sets is not a good thing to do. I know you like to work your arms, but you can still get bigger arms lifting light weights. You need to check your ego at the door, and lift lighter weights.
Well guys… I hope this has shed some light for you on what a good rep range is for you. There isn’t a perfect rep range, but try to do at least 8 reps with weight that you can utilize good form. There is going to be trial and error, and that is okay.
