Khanyisa Takes a Nap in the Bush & Fishan Finds the Perfect Back Scratch

With Khanyisa feeling a little more poorly recently, she certainly opted for more naps while with her herd - as you can see here, with Tokwe and Kumbura.

Khanyisa and some of the smaller elephants will on occasion lie down during their day out in the bush, from sunrise to set. The bigger elephants may take a short rest standing up, but overall this behaviour is normal for elephants, unlike humans who prefer to sleep straight through for a solid eight hours. Instead, these much larger mammals sleep on and off throughout the day.

With the rescued herd being protected at night in their homestead, with large sand mounds to sleep on, they are all able to sleep for longer periods at night than elephants in the wild, meaning that they require less sleep in the day. It's a much easier and less risky task for a baby elephant who is likely to have the support of mom and the allomothers around them to lie down when out in the bush too.

Khanyisa often takes naps during the day and our care team are sure to write down the times she sleeps, or excretes dung or urine, what she eats, who she spends her time with, how much of her milk she finishes, and other essential details for monitoring her ongoing wellbeing and health.

Fishan makes quite the appearance in this video, from keeping Kumbura company, to pushing the females about so he can get to the tasty-looking tree, and then finding himself the perfect back and rear end scratch in a tall lone tree. He makes sure to get every side of his back tickled - all the hard-to-reach places that not even a trunk can assist with.

Limpopo stays close to Khanyisa as Adine and Senior Carer Owen help feed Khanyisa some of the green leaves still on the bushes out in the reserve this dry winter. You'll get a brief sighting of Khanyisa's tusks and those beautiful albino eyes.
