A beautiful walk home before sunset with all the elephants & little Khanyisa

A beautiful late afternoon out with Adine and the herd! As the sun starts to dip and the moon starts to rise, Adine meets the elephants on foot out in the bush and it seems that everyone is enjoying a leafy snack.

Klaserie, Setombe's daughter, is the first to meet Adine and comes in very close, opening her mouth as she lifts her head and trunk up over her and her phone recording everything for us. Mambo is a little distance away and is met by Limpopo, Tokwe's first born, and Zindoga, who is then passed by his mother, Bubi.

The elephants are so beautiful to see in this golden setting sunlight and soon enough Khanyisa and her pack, Timisa and Kumbura come ambling past homeward for the evening.

Khanyisa is stuck in a bit of a dung traffic dam as the elephants in front of her drop their waste while walking. Khanyisa misses the missiles, thankfully, and keeps following after her family. Tokwe and Adine stay close together, as well as Fishan, who keeps up beautifully with the herd.

While we may look at the changing vegetation and wonder what will be left for the elephants to eat as the greens turn to browns, the elephants are pros at finding bark to strip off of branches, bulbs and roots and with those great trunks, they can make use of all that the trees in their wilderness have to offer.

At the dam, the herd amble around the water toward the stables and past guests at Jabulani Safari lodge enjoying the sunset view... Khanyisa gets caught up in her strut and headbutts Mambo's behind as the bull slows down to graze.

We would so love for Khanyisa to join the herd overnight already, but unfortunately with the amount of milk and care that she still needs from her human herd, with bottles every three hours, even after she reaches 2 years of age, it is difficult for the carers to watch over her and her dung, her sleep, and feed her constantly through the night.

We really look forward to the day we are able to hand her over fully to the herd and will no doubt be unable to sleep that night, wanting to watch over her and her family to make sure all goes well.

Khanyisa still enjoys close love, support and protection from Lundi, Bubi and her other allomothers, especially Kumbura, but also fully enjoys the company of her buddy, Timisa!

Once she arrives at the orphanage, she gets a delicious milk bottle before she can meet up with Lammie and Nungu and catch some shut-eye after a long day out in the bush!
