Khanyisa heads off in her own direction & Limpopo hurries to collect her | A walk with the elephants
Join us for a new morning at the orphanage as Adine and Carer Joshua help Khanyisa graze from the cold green grass out in the garden, with Lammie and Nungu close by. Adine and Joshue chat as Khanyisa gladly accepts the free nibbles from her friends and soon it's time to head out with the herd. Khensani joins in taking Khanyisa off to meet her herd and Lammie even bolts to the other side of the gardens to wish her ele-friend farewell! Lammie loves having Khanyisa's company and we continue to be grateful for the bond she is now able to form with Nungu so that both precious, dedicated mama-sheep have the company of a woolly chum during the days.
Khanyisa decides, as the herd approach the dam, that she has other places to be - she gets a little confused and tempted by a frequent milk bottle spot a little distance away. She walks off by herself, which is never a good idea for a little baby elephant in the wild and so Carer Clever goes to bring her back. Limpopo can't help herself and lets out a big rumble-cry before heading off to retrieve Khanyisa too. Timisa and Lundi later join as well, concerned clearly with Khanyisa. After she gets some more attention and nibbles of pellets from her carers, Khanyisa is satisfied to head off with her herd again. A very unusual interruption but it's beautiful to see the females coming to make sure Sunshine is ok.
The herd walk off to the first foraging area for the day, where the carers will stop walking and rest too. Some areas in the reserve have more lush vegetation for the herd to feed on and are key landmarks throughout the day.
We hope you enjoy this time with the elephants and thank you as always for your support!
