Salvage Material Repurposed Into Trailer Fenders
Rusted, discarded sheets of 16 gauge mild steel are formed into a set of fenders for one particular trailer being built. HOWEVER, this style of fender can easily be adapted for use with any style trailer with the wheels outside the trailer frame. Change dimensions to suit your trailer and wheels and if its a tandem....just increase the length of the fenders to encompass both wheels. Without a sheet metal brake such as was used in this fabrication, a heavy vice and pair of angle irons can be used to to hold the thicker material. Once the material is clamped tightly it can be bent with a large rubber mallet wielded by controlled taps or swings of the mallet. To bend the short way bends, Two 'C' clamps and a propane torch to heat the area to be bent can be implemented. Heat it to a low red and fold it by hand with welding gloves, tapping on the backside of the bends with the mallet. Easy peasy. Well, it may take a bit of effort, but anything worth making is worth a little work.
I decided to make this a 'stand alone' video and not part of the sawmill trailer build series because these fenders CAN be somewhat universal. All you have to do is decide on a different way to mount the fender with welded brackets. The installation on this particular trailer turned out to be quite unique by using small 'U' bolts to go around the 5/8'' truss-bent rods of the construction bar joists with the fender being reinforced by using squares of 1/4'' plate on the inside of the fender wells. They were then cut off and peened over to minimize loosening in the future. Of course if you have seen any of the sawmill trailer build, you have seen the finished product long before today.
Hopefully today's video, though not of the 'how to' variety, may in fact give the viewer an idea of the route to follow if the decision is made to do a pair of DIY fenders for their trailer. Just observe the technique and improve it for yourself to make it your own.
