Grooving Tool Handmade Lock for Round Pipe, Septic Tank Riser

A hand held grooving tool, sometimes called a lap joint hand seamer is used to form a lock on a round fitting to serve as a concrete form. This will have a 22'' diameter outer ring and a 16' inner ring, to allow pre-mix concrete to be poured in between to form a 3'' thick riser 17'' tall. Of course reinforcement is required on the inside to keep the weight of the concrete from collapsing the interior portion, but that is made of scrap blocks of wood nominally 16'' long criss crossing the internal area.
No real skill is needed for a simple project like this. All you need is the basic tools shown in the video. The grooving tool is nothing more than a piece of steel with a deep groove ground in it the width of the size of lap joint you desire to create. In this case, 3/8'' is optimal. A sheet metal roller in not even required to form the round....just roll it around and hook the opposing locks. It's best to have an extra pair of hands on larger pieces like this, but its not necessary for smaller projects at all.
The hour to make the two pieces of pipe were the easiest part of the project. My son then did the rest as other projects took over my day. First he had to dig to the top surface of the septic tank, clean back the area and remove the cracked and crumbling risers carefully. Then once the form was put in place the mixing of the concrete was to be done. After about half filed, the pre-made round re-bar assembly was jostled into the concrete and the remaining portion of the form filled to the brim.
Yes, we are tight with a buck so that's the main reason for the project. Replacement risers were $75.00 each, too short to reach the surface and without a cap...those were extra. Besides, I brought up my son to do virtually everything you can to for your self....up to a point. This was by no means as expensive to do by hand as it would have been to just go to the septic tank store and buy everything needed. A few bags of pre mix and some salvaged sheet metal out of an old walk in beer cooler was all that was required....well with just a little bit of elbow grease added for good measure.
This was a good place for the old tinners anvil to be busted out from under the workbench, but this cast iron cone served the purpose of holding the pipe for locking down the joint quite well. This old cone was easier to secure by the flange to act as an anvil than the regular anvil that is normally used.
My son got to get involved in the metal making for a change, and I allowed him to do ALL the pre-mix work himself...besides, its his job anyway so its only the right thing to do.
Oh yeah, this was recorded sometime during nice weather as evidenced by the shorts and tee shirts... Sorry but I am running way behind on videos.....Can you tell ?? Thanks for stopping by for a visit and hope you found the Grooving Tool as 'groovy' as did this old hippy....
