'Super fog' causes multi-vehicle pile-up in Louisiana
Seven people were killed and dozens injured, after “super fog” caused a multi-vehicle crash on Interstate 55 near Ponchatoula, Louisiana, on October 23, media reported, citing officials.
Louisiana police said there were reports of multiple crashes on I-55 as thick fog combined with marsh-fire smoke reduced visibility.
Both directions of the highway would remain closed overnight, as crews tried to clear hazardous material from a tanker truck involved in the crash, media reported.
Footage shows vehicles on fire and thick plumes of smoke billowing from the crash site.
Super fog forms when a mixture of smoke and moisture released from smoldering material such as leaves and trees, mixes with cooler, nearly saturated air, according to the National Weather Service.
