The automotive journalist is talking about theTata Nano, an Indian compact vehicle that washailed as "the world's cheapest car" when itwas unveiled in 2008. It's tough to imagineany vehicle generating more curiosity thanan iconic supercar like a Lamborghini.Butthe Nano captured the world's imaginationwhen Ratan Tata, head of the Tata businessconglomerate, drove it onto the podium at the2008 India Auto Expo in New Delhi.
The initial price Tata put on it was 100,000Indian rupees (about $2,500 at the time)."Everyone was so impressed because no oneexpected to see that sort of car for that price,"Dhabhar, who was at the unveiling, tells TIME.
The "people's car," as Tata called it, was meantto be a small,safe,family-friendly,affordablealternative to the motorcycles and scootersthat are popular runabouts for India's middleclasses.Tata first envisioned the Nano whenhe saw a family of four perched precariouslyon a two-wheeler. It was a great concept andone that was executed well. The asking pricewas also a great hook, although with taxesand popular add-ons like power steering andair-conditioning,Nanos never really left thefactory that cheaply.
