Lightness is a combination of different techniques in one harmonic way. For solo jazz the key to lightness is the attitude between you and the floor. The skilful way to manipulate and work with your weight and gravity is the key to lightness. 🦆
🏋️♂️Usually I say “become heavier, that will help you to be lighter”! Sounds like a paradox, but that’s what it is.
Being heavier is giving weight to the floor. When you bounce with the idea and intention down through the floor, you release the weight, you share it to the floor. Like as if you would share it with your partner in Lindy Hop.
When I share my weight with the floor, I give information, create connection and then I can use this connection to push myself from the floor into different directions.
🙄The skilful way to manipulate and work with your weight and gravity is the key to lightness.
If we hit the floor with our steps and body, literally smash ourselves against the floor every time we step, we will appear stiff and therefore heave.
Stiffness, rigidness is opposite to being available for dance. When you are stiff and tense you are locked. Your hundreds of muscles become 1 big moonlit of a muscle and it doesn’t allow you to release weight, to use your body. A dancer who is locked, overtones is literally just throwing him/herself around the space and hit against the floor 😂
As well the work of your feet and knees play a big role in lightness, but we talk about that next time.
Be available for dance, sense your weight and use it for your benefit. ❤️
