Don't be satisfied with the average stuff. Explore the work of your arms to find your style.
Wrists.
Often abandoned and forgotten in solo jazz dances those very important and deliciously beautiful body parts are the creators of the work of arms.
Paying attention and being conscious about your hand, finger, wrist movement can open a universe and can charm you into dance for a long time. Fingers and arms are full of expressive qualities. All the gestures we do in our daily life, come from that part of the body.
At times you can say more with your palms and fingers than with your face :)
Underlining, directing, accentuating, saying a specific thing using the “archetypical” gesture, the arms are as important as any other part of your body for dance.
The shapes and forms that your arms can create can transform your dance. You can obtain and use the power of transmitting emotion or even a word, sentence charges with emotion when you play with the shape and tension of your fingers and arms.
I feel there are convenient and so to say “agreed by everyone” ways of using the arms in solo jazz dance. This is how you do it in shorty George and this is how to do it in tacky Annie. Personally I am inclined to search further and not be just satisfied with the given average agreement. Jazz is a pure expression. Dance is expression. There is no need in repeating shapes, instead strive for exploration and discovery.
