Andrew and I tackle the second route that makes up one of the Golden Ridges along Taiwan’s northeast coast.
This one takes you along, around and even through some of the giant exhaust pipes of the derelict former gold and copper smelting plant that has become a prime scenic spot of the Ruifang region.

Transport Info:
Driving to the quaint mountain town of Jinguashi (金瓜石) in New Taipei (新北市) is pretty simple on a weekday if you go early in the morning, but at weekends it is a lot more troublesome.
The car park I used is Quan Ji Tang Parking (勸濟堂停車場).
Most people prefer to take the train to Keelung (基隆) or Ruifang (瑞芳) and then a short ride on one of the very frequent bus services.
Taipei-Jinguashi Bus: You can take bus 1062 from Exit 2 of Zhongxiao Fuxing MRT Station (忠孝復興) via Jiufen and get off at Jinguashi.
Keelung-Jinguashi: Take bus 788 from Keelung Railway Station via Ruifang, Jiufen and get off at Jinguashi Station.
