Were The F1 Drivers Pressured Into Racing In Saudi Arabia?

Red Bull’s Max Verstappen started things off

“We made that decision together, but after the weekend I do think it will be talked about”

“I think everyone has an opinion about it, but it’s not wise for me to say what I think. That will come. That’s also how we agreed with the drivers and team bosses”

Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc spoke along similar lines

“I don’t want to go too much into details on this subject now, but it’s definitely a discussion that we should have after this race, once everything calms down and we’ll look back at it, and then we’ll see”

His teammate Carlos Sainz agreed as well

“I agree. I think there will need to be discussions after this race. Because clearly what has happened in the last 24 hours is definitely a point of discussion and consideration that we need to take going into the future”

Mercedes driver George Russell seemed at a loss for words

“From what I understand, everything was under control in this specific region, and what happens outside of the region, you cannot control. I don’t know what to say, really”

While speaking to Sky Sports, F1 CEO Stefano Domenicali explained the need to keep racing in Saudi Arabia

“No, I think it is not a matter of question marks, it is a matter of understanding the situation for sure”

“We are not blind but can’t forget one thing, this country it is also true that Formula One and the sport, we believe is doing massive step forward”

Red Bull team principal Christian Horner stated that “Ferrari are impressive and their car is so competitive”

“They started early on this project last year”

“[Our results] after such an enormous effort last season, is a real testament to the hard work of the entire team”

Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc feels that “there is plenty to learn from the qualifying [in Saudi Arabia]”

“We were quicker on used tyres than we were on new ones”

“We have to understand why that was, so that we can put them in a better window next time”

His teammate, Carlos Sainz, concurred by stating “interestingly enough, I’ve been fast and more comfortable on a used set of softs than on the new set”

Haas team principal Guenther Steiner has wished “Mick [Schumacher] well after a quite frightening crash”

“We hope Mick recovers quickly and is in a position to race again soon”

Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff explained that the “optimum scenario for [them] was the no-man’s-land between the Red Bull and Alpine”

“That’s certainly not acceptable”

McLaren’s Lando Norris thinks that “with this era of cars, with how you have to run them and how they're designed, some kerbs throughout the year might need to change”

“I think this kerb [in Jeddah] is one of them. You can't have such an aggressive kerb at such a speed that we're running at”

“And the thing that makes it worse is how it's angled to come back and then curves around. You just get it a little bit wrong and it can be a big incident”
Do you think the race would have still gone ahead if something similar had taken place during a race in a different country?
