Lecture 88: Bobby Sands the Man behind the headlines with Colm Scullion and guest Christy Moore

We all have heard of Bobby Sands; the story of the horrific and fatal ordeal that he undertook in the late Spring of 1981. Some of us know of his inspiring poetry and of the few select photographs that exist of him. Others may know of his famous quote: “Our Revenge Will Be the Laughter of Our Children.” But do we really know who Bobby Sands was? Who was the man behind the legend ?
We will be joined by folk singer Christy Moore who will outline how Bobby influenced his music. Christy will also sing Bobby Sands favourite song entitled "The Ballad of Tim Evans"
Ulster historian Stephen McCracken will chat with Colm Scullion, who will seek to give us his personal insight on the man who was Bobby Sands. Having shared a cell with him in the notorious H3 block at Long Kesh (The Maze) in 1978-79, Colm grew to know Bobby extremely well. They shared stories and sang songs together. During the No Wash Protest, Colm had the rare experience of witnessing the powerful poetry of Sands being written on the walls of the cell before the authorities washed them clean. Colm has memories of Bobby’s dreams and his desires; and his renowned humour. Colm will discuss his leadership, his emotional intelligence and his aspiration to see social and political change across the communities of the North of Ireland where he lived.
This lecture isn't aimed to either glorify or pass judgement on any of Bobby Sands activity prior to his time in the H Blocks; indeed and this part of life will not be explored. We simply aim to enhance our understanding of this man who has left a lasting impression on the world.
