The UK Housing Market Challenge: with David Simmonds MP, Yolande Barnes (UCL), Piers Williamson (THFC) and Les Mayhew (Cass).

Why you should watch: The UK housing market (and more specifically, the housing finance market) faces a range of challenges - Covid, an ageing population, a taxation system that militates against downsizing, low (or zero) interest rates, the evisceration of conventional offices in favour of 'WFH', historic over-reliance on apartment blocks (with all the cladding and building issues revealed as a result of the Grenfell catastrophe)... What do we do? What should we do? And what will the present Conservative government do as we emerge from the current pandemic-induced crisis?  A panel of experts lays out the problems - and offers a number of ways forward.

Panellists:

David Simmonds MP is the Conservative member for Ruislip, Northwood and Pinner, and Councillor for Hillingdon. He is also chairman of the APPG on Housing and Planning, with long experience of the problems local governments face in the housing sector.

Yolande Barnes is a Professor and Chair of the Bartlett Real Estate Institute at UCL, as well as an NED at Space Syntax, an urban planning consultancy. She was formerly director of world research at Savill's.

Piers Williamson is Chief Executive of The Housing Finance Corporation, which he joined in 2002 after a career as an investment banker in the City. THFC is a specialist mutual finance company that lends long-term institutional funding to UK-registered housing associations. He is also an NED at the Newbury Building Society.

Les Mayhew is Professor of Statistics at The Business School (formerly the Cass Business School) at City University. He is a Fellow of the Institute of Actuaries and a Member of the Royal Economic Society. He is also a managing director at Mayhew Harper Associates.
