When carrying out destructive searches I always leave a wedge of the bank at the edge of the water. This way the water stays in the channel and the soil behind remains dry. Well, that is unless there are burrows and the water pours through as shown here.
It is common practice to carry out destructive searches of all burrows recorded. However, you will often get the situation where there are burrow entrances under the water line and they could be missed even if you have a feel around. A quick way to just make sure nothing is missed is to take out a deep but narrow strip behind the toe of the bank. This means you end up with the wedge and if there are burrows that were unrecorded, it will soon be clear if water pours through. If burrows are recorded, then destructive searches can continue with a combination of hand tools and excavator.
