El Cajas | Cuenca, Ecuador | Doctor Teaches Us the Wim Hof Method in a Freezing Lake

As a full-time traveler, I'm always looking for a way to experience and learn about a place through a local. This is what makes the difference between feeling like an observer and feeling like I'm participating in life as it's lived in that place.

Full-time travel, no matter how beautiful or exotic the destination, can be a lonely existence. But sometimes, when we're lucky, we meet people who take us along to participate in a day of their lives.

I met Israel on a Facebook Expat group. He told me we was going on a walk and swim in a lake at El Cajas Parque National, a national park 30 minutes outside of Cuenca, Ecuador. He asked me if I wanted to come and I said yes.

While we are in his truck, on our way to the national park, he tells us that we'll need to prepare ourselves before we go into the lake. Our bodies would need to be conditioned to be able to endure the cold water! The mood changes. One of us confirms to bow out. I, on the other hand, get excited. He tells us that the technique is a variation of the "Wim Hof" method. Wim Hof is known as the "Ice Man" who attempted to climb Mount Everest wearing nothing but a pair of shorts and shoes. He swam under a frozen lake for 16 minutes... until his retinas froze. This guy is a legend and I'd admired his work from afar. I'd taken cold showers before but now, I'd get my chance to test the Wim Hof Breathing Technique for real in a freezing cold lake, with Doctor Israel!

Was it cold. No doubt, yes!
