FREE RADICAL MEDIATED
CELL INJURY
• These are the chemical species/ atoms or group of atoms that have single or more unpaired electrons in their outer orbit.
• Highly reactive, unstable chemicals
Conditions where free radicals are implicated in cell injury and death
• Injury due to chemicals/drugs
• Ischemia reperfusion injury
• Irradiation
• Phagocytosis leading to killing of microbes
• Cellular aging
• Carcinogenesis
Free radicals
• Superoxide oxygen
• Peroxide (Hydrogen peroxide)
• Hydroxyl radical
• Nitric oxide
• Peroxynitrite
• Hypochlorous acid
Antioxidant mechanisms
Enzymatic Antioxidants
• Catalase
• Superoxide dismutase
• Glutathione peroxidase
Non-enzymatic Antioxidants
• Endogenous or exogenous substances which inactivate free radicals
• Vitamins A, C , E
• Sulphydryl containing compounds
• Cysteine and glutathione
• Serum proteins
• Ceruloplasmin and transferrin
