• Definition of apoptosis
• Causes /conditions where apoptosis is seen
• Understand the mechanism of apoptosis
• Extrinsic pathway
• Intrinsic pathway
A pathway of cell death
Induced
By a tightly regulated suicide program
Found in 1972 John Kerr, Andrew H. Wyllie & Alastair Currie
Greek - mean "falling off" (like leaves falling from a tree)
Also referred to as programmed cell death
PHYSIOLOGICAL CONDITIONS
Embryogenesis
Involution of hormone dependent tissues
Menstruation, menopause, weaning
Loss of cells in proliferating cell populations
Bone marrow, thymus
Removal of self reactive lymphocytes
Death of inflammatory cells after their functions are over
PATHOLOGICAL CONDITIONS
Injured cells which cant be repaired
• DNA damage
• Misfolded protein accumulation
• Viral infections
• Duct obstructions
