Roaring Twenties: Give Me A Night In June, 1927 - Johnny Johnson's Statler Pennsylvanians

Johnny Johnson and His Statler Pennsylvanians – Give Me A Night In June, Fox-Trot (Cliff Friend) with Vocal Trio, Victor 1927 (USA)

NOTE: Johnny JOHNSON (Malcolm Johnson b. 1902 in Washington, Indiana) was American pianist, organist, dance bandleader. He started career as pianist and organist in the renowned Harry Yerkes Orchestra. In 1922 he formed his own dance band with a group of solid musicians, including Jack Teagarden, Red Nichols and good vocalists such as Sam Browne and Franklyn Baur. In spite of that, his band was only mildly successful and in 1926 Johnny Johnson joined Ben Bernie’s orchestra as a pianist, where he stayed only one year. In 1927 he formed another band, which was contracted for some time at the Statler Hotel in New York and cut several very good dance records (“Thou Swell”, “Just Another Day Wasted Away”, “Sunbeams”) yet again with not much success in the crowded American music market of the Roaring Twenties. His band’s greatest success was surviving the Great Depression, when many other orchestras were disbanded, and in the 1930s Johnny Johnson’s Orchestra was at last successful having changed its sound into a sweeter style. In 1936, he appeared on the Tasty-Yeast radio program and continued performing ever since until late 1940s, when he disbanded for the last time and started teaching piano in New Jersey.
