1927: Vernon Dalhart & Carson Robison - Shine On, Harvest Moon
Shine On Harvest Moon (Jack Norworth – Nora Bayes) – Vernon Dalhart & Carson Robison with International Orchestra, Victor 1927 (USA)
NOTE: Carson Jay ROBISON (born 1890 in Oswego, Kansas - died 1957 in Poughkeepsie, NY) American country music singer and songwriter. Although his influence is generally forgotten today, he played a major role in promoting country music in its early years through numerous recordings and radio appearances. In 1924, he signed a contract with the Victor label for a series of country music recordings and in the same year met Vernon DALHART (b. 1883 in Jefferson, Texas - d. 1948 in Bridgeport, Connecticut), who was already one of the most recognizable American pop singers of the era, recording extensively for Edison Records. Their relationship resulted in many performances and recordings together, and in Vernon Dalhart's career it marked a transition to country music, of which he became one of the best-known performers in the USA in the following years. Unfortunately, due to a minor disagreement between the two, their duo broke up in 1929 and the two careers went their separate ways. I don't know what orchestra is behind the name "International Orchestra". - this is probably another version of the house dance bands of Nat Shilkret, who was then music director at the Victor Records Company.
"Shine On, Harvest Moon" was a popular early 20th century song attributed to the married vaudeville troupe Nora Bayes and Jack Norworth. It was one of a series of moon-related Tin Pan Alley songs of the era. The song was debuted by Bayes and Norworth in the 1908 Ziegfeld Follies and was met with great acclaim. It became a pop standard, sung and recorded by various pop and jazz artists including Kate Smith https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zVb-CYsEEzY Ethel Waters and The Boswell Sister. The song is still performed and recorded in the 21st century.
