Lecture 155: Up Like A Bird: The Rise and Fall of an IRA Commander with Brendan Hughes

In his recently-published memoir, Brendan Hughes, a founder member of the Provisional IRA in Co Tyrone, charts his early guerrilla days around the border area; his leadership of a secret ‘fundraising’ unit tasked with carrying out bank raids in the Republic; his planning of the famed 1973 helicopter escape from Mountjoy Jail; and his part in the mass IRA breakout from Portlaoise Prison the following year.
In this lecture, Brendan Hughes will detail his meteoric rise through the ranks of the Provisionals, provide first-hand accounts of how it operated, particularly south of the border in the early 1970s, and why the leadership ultimately banished him.
Brendan Hughes spent more than 20 years in prison before being released under the Good Friday Agreement.
Douglas Dalby, contributor to the book, has written extensively for a range of national and international media, including The New York Times, The Irish Times and the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists.
