Tito Vilanova is set to step down as head coach of Barcelona.

The 44-year-old had surgery to remove a cancerous tumour from a gland in his upper neck in November 2011 and is reported to have suffered a relapse.

Barcelona suspended all media activities on Wednesday and are set to make a statement later in the day.

The news comes just days after Lionel Messi signed a new contract until 2018 with the Catalan giants.

Vilanova took replaced Pep Guardiola this season after passing medical checks, and with the approval of the doctors who had treated him.

Vilanova was Guardiola's assistant during four hugely successful years, winning 13 trophies including two Champions Leagues and three Primera Division titles.

Barcelona have won 15 of their first 16 league games under Vilanova and lead La Liga with 46 points, nine ahead of Atletico Madrid in second place.
