PORTUGAL | Group F | Team Profile | EURO 2020
Defending champions, Portugal, join Hungary, France and Germany in a thrilling group at this summer's delayed European Championship.
The extra year has given Portugal a chance to plan for a future without Cristiano Ronaldo, even as he aims to break the record of 109 international goals in men's soccer held by former Iran player Ali Daei.
Before the pandemic hit, Diogo Jota was a Wolverhampton player who had played just 26 minutes for his country - now he's a regular for Liverpool and Portugal with six goals in 12 international games.
Joao Felix is settling in too and at the back, Ruben Dias is more assured after his first season at Manchester City - that helps to reduce the reliance on 38-year-old defender Pepe.
'A Selecao' face Hungary in their first match of the campaign in Budapest - with the presence of fans, Fernando Santos' men will need to be on top form to gain any advantage.
1. 00:11 - 00:28 SOUNDBITE (Portuguese): Fernando Santos, Portugal coach:
(On the Euro 2020):
"Portugal is not only a candidate (to win it) is something more than that because for the first time in our history we will play the Euro championship as (defending) champions, a title that we achieved with a lot of merit and a lot of hard work."
2. 00:38 - 01:10 SOUNDBITE (English): Cristiano Ronaldo, Juventus and Portugal:
(on Portugal's chances of successfully defending their Euro 2016 title in 2021):
"It will be tough. But we are a good team, we are a young team. We have a fantastic coach. So we're very, very, very positive on that to be honest. We don't know what's going to happen. We have to think about our group, but I think we'll be good, we'll be good, because our team, it's better. We improve a lot. The young kids are becoming even better. So, I'm very confident."
3. 01:24 - 02:16 SOUNDBITE (French): Raphael Guerreiro, Portugal forward:
(Are you looking forward to the European Championships?)
"I hope to retain the European Championship, of course. If you win it once, you always want to win it a second time. We will defend this title with valour and with our hearts. Because that's the reason we were able to win it. We are in a tough group with both Germany and France. So the matches will be great and very intense. Like I said, every single match is important."
4. 02:20 - 02:47 SOUNDBITE (Portuguese): Joao Mario, former Portugal midfielder:
(On their draw for Euro 2020):
"Of course, we are going to play in the group of death. It is a very difficult group. We are the European champions and we want to defend our title. We also know the road is going to be complicated but if you want to win the Euro you need to start for those games. We are facing very difficult opponents, the last two World Cup winners. We have a lot of respect for them, and for the third team that will be decided by the playoffs, but we have what it is needed."
