Deborah: Good morning everyone and welcome to Great Day Houston. Thank you so much. Okay, for those where it applies, we hope you had a great spring break. On this medical Monday, I think all of our doctors will agree that one way to get rid of stress is to get in touch with nature. We popped over to Galveston for the weekend and got in touch with the sand and the surf there. It was really nice, a little cool. But my son, of course, got a little too close to nature when he went out at night and started collecting the crabs on the beach. I was like, "No, baby, don't bring those back to the hotel room." I got in touch with nature myself and I enjoyed a combination of chocolate, flour, vanilla, and pecans. All things found in the great outdoors. When you put them together they form the double treat hot chocolate chip cookie. Have you had those?

I'm sure the doctors will agree that there should be all the moderation right there.

Well, okay, moving on, how many of you have a smartphone in our live studio audience here? Okay, hold them all up. Yeah, you have your phones. Almost everyone has one these days. Before the show, we usually ask people to turn their phones off and put them away. So let me ask you, how many of you felt a little disconnected or a little uneasy when you had to push the off button? Right? Because you're missing like the lottery or something. Somebody is going to call you and tell you won a billion dollars and, oops, you didn't pick up. But don't worry, the call you get is usually a friend calling to say they see you right now on TV anyway. Those happen. They're like "Girl, you on TV."

"I know. I came here I'm part of the live studio audience." Well, apparently, feeling anxious is the norm. A recent study of 300 college students shows a link between heavy technology use and anxiety. And here to talk about that and a few other medical hot topics, please welcome our panel of doctors, bariatric surgeon Dr. Robert Marvin, radiologist Dr. Melissa O'Toole, chiropractor Dr. Tony Deramus and ear, nose, and throat specialist Dr. Raza Pasha. Welcome to the show this morning! Good morning!
All right, I remember back in the day, the two people who basically had pagers where doctors and journalists, right? And if you didn't have you pager with you, you start, "Oh no, they might be trying to get in touch with me." Same kind of you having your phones, you all need to be well-connected. But it just seems like we are so connected and too connected at times.

Dr. O'Toole: Definitely.

Deborah: The anxiety part is like "Whoa!"

Dr. Marvin: Yeah, for our business, my business in particular, we have to be available to the patients 24 hours a day. So it's a necessity. And sometimes I wish we could get away from that a little bit. But obviously, there are people that want to use that frequently.

Deborah: Yeah, it's a blessing and a curse I think because back in the old day, someone could say, "Hey, I called you." And it's like, "Oh, I'm sorry, I must have been out of the house." But now, it's like you are always available.

Dr. Pasha: Yeah, and it becomes an issue when you're using it as a distraction because you're uncomfortable and using it as a coping mechanism. So if you're in a social situation and you want to withdraw, instead of interacting with your group, instead, you go in a corner and start checking emails and finding out what's online. That becomes a deterrent.
