The VATICAN & TRASTEVERE: Free Sights in Rome // 140

On my fourth day in Rome, I went to see The Vatican, Giancolo Hill, and the Trastevere neighborhood!

Let me start by saying that these are some of the greatest free sights in Rome. I paid absolutely no money all day (aside from the 1.50 metro ride) despite visiting three amazing parts of Rome.

St. Peter's Basilica (in the Vatican) costs nothing to go inside. You can spend as much time inside as you like and even visit the previous popes' tombs beneath the Basilica. Visiting the Vatican was much different than I expected, but it helped a lot having Rick Steve's Audio Guide to walk me through. Honestly, the Rick Steve's Audio Guides will have you a ton of money on paid tours through Europe. (Not sponsored.) I found out who the heck St. Peter was, how Michelangelo fit into it all, and why this place was important.

After wandering through St. Peter's Basilica in the Vatican, I went for a nice walk. While I expected to walk through a park to find the top of Giancolo Hill, I instead took a wrong turn and ended up walking around the hill and finding an entrance on the complete other side (about an hour later). My advice: pay closer attention to your map. :)

However, Giancolo Hill was well worth the walk and then some. I didn't even know there was somewhere in Rome I could go to see the city from this point of view. Standing on top of Giancolo hill, I could look down and see the entire city below me! Honestly, I don't know why this is not a more popular spot. It's gorgeous.

I made my way down the hill much quicker, and began wandering through the magical Trastevere neighborhood. This is, to me, the Real Rome. Trastevere at night felt much more local and authentic. No one was outside asking me to come into their restaurants. It was not crowded at all, and I felt like I was walking through a secret place. Walking in Trastevere at night, along the narrow cobblestone roads, the climbing vines, and the peaceful atmosphere made for an incredible place. I highly recommend a walk through Trastevere. When you go, make sure you go all the way between Giancolo Hill and the River. The view of the lights twinkling on the River at night was serene.

Eventually, after all of that, I made it back to my hostel on the other side of the city! If you're asking yourself "What are the best free sights in Rome?" be sure to add The Vatican, Giancolo Hill, and Trastevere to your list!
