Pu'u O'o Lava Lake June 6, 2010

Pu'u O'o has been serving mainly as a chimney to vent the majority of gases from Kilauea for the last three years but has recently come back to life with a small lava lake inside the crater. The lake is about 1000 by 400 feet and more than 100 feet down from the rim. A thin layer of crust floats on the surface and is continuously being overturned and sunk by the swirling currents in the lake. New lava is constantly bubbling to the top and spattering as volcanic gases breach the surface.

Pu'u O'o is a dynamic volcanic vent, so you may see different landscapes on its crater depending on when the video was taken. Its geologic features are continuously collapsing and rebuilding over very short periods of time.
