Kilauea Lava Burns Highway 130 January 5, 2011
Lava breaks out from under the surface at the end of Highway 130 and quickly covers a large patch of asphalt. The asphalt was not able to burn quickly enough as it was being covered, so superheated jets of gas were ignited as they escaped through the hot lava. The lava had reached the end of Highway 130 two days before and had stalled and crusted over. But a surge in supply created enough pressure for the lava to break the crust and flood the immediate area.
