Royal Gardens Lava Flow February 5, 2010

The surface flows continued to come down through the Royal Gardens Subdivision on February 5, 2010. On this day, they were at a very steep part of the hillside known as Pulama Pali. The more than 45 degree angle caused the flows to continually break out from the shallow tubes higher up and interrupt the flow to the streams which had reached the base. This constant interruption prevented the flows from going much beyond the base of the pali and out into the coastal plain two miles from the ocean. At the same time, this provided a good show of a'a streams spread out over 1/2 mile on the hillside.

These clips also show how the steepness of the hillside caused fiery boulders to constantly detach from the streams and start tumbling down the hillside.
