How to Chat with Friends in Roblox
Want to connect and talk with your friends while playing or just hanging out in Roblox? This 2025 tutorial from Roblox Tutorials will show you everything you need to know about how to chat with your friends in Roblox, whether you're in a game, in a Party, or sending direct messages on PC, mobile, or console.
Communication is key to the Roblox experience, and we'll guide you through the different chat options, including in-game (Experience Chat) and private messaging features. We'll also cover crucial Roblox chat safety features, like chat filters, and how to adjust your Roblox privacy settings to control who can talk to you.
Section 1: In-Game Chat (Experience Chat)
This is the chat you use when you're actually playing inside a Roblox experience.
Open the Chat Window. While in a game, press the / key on your keyboard (PC/Mac) or tap the speech bubble icon in the top-left corner of your screen (mobile/console). This will open the chat window and a text bar.
Type Your Message. Type what you want to say into the text bar.
Send Your Message. Press Enter (PC/Mac) or the "Send" button (mobile/console) to send your message. It will appear above your avatar's head and in the chat log.
Public vs. Private In-Game Chat:
Public Chat: Messages you type normally go to everyone in the same server.
Private Chat (Whisper): To send a private message to a specific friend within the same game, type /w [friend's username] [your message] and press Enter. For example:
/w CoolGamer123 Hey, want to team up?
Section 2: Party Chat (Group Up and Play Together)
Roblox Party is a dedicated feature to group up with friends and communicate, even across different experiences. Party chat is available for users 13 and older.
How to Start or Join a Party:
Open the Roblox app on mobile or PC (Party features are best in the app).
Go to the "Party" tab (usually found at the bottom navigation bar on mobile).
Click the + button to add connections (friends) to your new group.
Click "Create" to start the Party.
Once in a Party, you can text chat with up to 6 friends. There will be a dedicated chat window for your Party.
You can also choose an experience for your Party to play, and everyone can join the same server together!
Accessing Party Chat in an Experience: If you are in an active Party, Party chat will be easily accessible alongside other communication controls within the in-game menu (often found by pressing Esc or the Roblox icon).
Section 3: Direct Messaging Friends (Outside of Games)
You can also send private messages to your friends directly from the Roblox website or app, outside of any specific game.
On PC (Website):
Log in to roblox.com.
Look for the gray chat box in the lower-right corner of the screen. Click it to open your chat menu.
You'll see a list of your online friends and chat groups. Click on a friend's name to open a private chat window.
Type your message and press Enter.
On Mobile (App):
Open the Roblox app.
Tap the "Party" tab (or "Chat" / "Messages" on older versions).
Tap on a friend's name to start a direct message.
Section 4: Roblox Chat Safety and Privacy Settings (Crucial for Parents)
Roblox has strong chat filters to block inappropriate content and personal information. However, you can further customize your settings.
Go to Settings.
Navigate to "Privacy" or "Parental Controls."
Adjust Communication Settings:
"Who can chat with me in app?" This controls who can send you direct messages outside of games. Options usually include "Everyone," "Friends," or "No one."
"Who can chat with me in experience?" This controls who can chat with you while in a game. Options are similar.
"Party" Settings: For users 13+, you can choose "Who can one-on-one Party with me" and "Who can Group Party with me," with options like "Connections" or "No one."
Important for users under 13: Roblox has stricter default settings for younger users, often limiting communication to just public in-experience chat with heavy filtering, or requiring parental permission for more direct communication. Parents can adjust these via "Parental Controls."
Now you're all set to chat safely and effectively with your friends on Roblox!
