Fantastic Planet 1973 - HD Trailer

Fantastic Planet (1973) - Cult Film Index Review

Directed by René Laloux and brought to life through the surreal illustrations of Roland Topor, Fantastic Planet is a French-Czechoslovak co-production that blends political allegory, dreamlike imagery, and a haunting experimental score. Based on Stefan Wul’s novel Oms en série, the story takes place on the alien world of Ygam, where giant blue humanoids called Draags keep humans (“Oms”) as pets or pests. When a young Om named Terr escapes captivity and gains access to Draag knowledge, the balance between species begins to shift in unsettling and unpredictable ways.
Fantastic Planet earned the Special Jury Prize at Cannes and remains influential not only for its art but for its willingness to treat animation as a medium for philosophical science fiction rather than children’s fantasy. Strange, unsettling, and hypnotic, it stands as one of the key works in global cult animation.
