Hello, everyone. My name’s Roger and at 16, I’d really reached rock bottom, living on the beach and getting soap bars from colleagues, but one kind gesture turned my life into a success story.

So, my childhood was definitely a wild ride. As soon as I was born, my biological parents ditched me. I was put into some dirty basket and left near the supermarket. My parents found me surrounded by shopping carts and stray cats and took me to their home. Well, it was more like a trailer than a home, but at least I wouldn’t be eaten by wild animals. At first, I really felt like I was loved—they even taught me to read. And I didn’t see any red flags as I had nothing to compare them to. But as soon as I was able to walk and feed myself, they started teaching me different things. They taught me to steal—to go into a crowd of people, act innocent, and snatch their purses, jewelry, or phones. They’d be so happy when I’d bring a bunch of stuff home that I didn’t question it. They called me “talented” and “gifted,” so I went along with it. Until my teenage years…

I didn’t look innocent anymore, so people were cautious around me. And this one time, an older man saw me taking a phone out of a woman’s pocket in the park, so he started chasing me and calling me names… I was so scared, I thought that I was gonna be dead then and there. I managed to run away, but that evening, I told my father that I didn’t want to do this anymore. I wanted to go to school and then try to find an honorable job. He wasn’t having it. He said that there was no place in his home for ungrateful kids and I should go back and sleep in that supermarket where they got me. I couldn’t believe that my loving parents could do that to me. Back then, I didn’t understand that their love was based on how useful I was. So I was 16, I had one t-shirt, a pair of jeans, and no home...
