Hi, my name is Sheila… and my disease made me so lonely, I threw a party that nearly ended my life.

Now, I’ve had this condition my whole life, but it took us a long time to understand that. When I was a baby, my mom thought I was a great kid. I never cried, I never whined, I was just a happy baby.

But when I was a toddler, my mom realized something was wrong. Very, very wrong. She came into the kitchen one morning and saw that I had my hand directly on the hot burner on the stove and I wasn’t even reacting.

I had horrible burns all over my hands, but the doctors didn’t know what was going on. At first, they thought my mom had purposefully hurt me! They ran a few tests and sent me on my way, unsure of what was going on.

But then, it got worse. One day, I was playing in the kitchen. My mom heard me giggling and came in to find that I had spilt boiling hot water all over myself, giving me horrible burns, and I was just sitting there, laughing!

My mom rushed me to the hospital to treat my burns. My face looked like it belonged in a horror movie. The boiling water had seriously disfigured me. The doctors had to do a skin graft to make me look even remotely normal. That’s when they finally took it seriously. They realized I had a genetic condition called CIPA, which meant I couldn’t feel pain, heat, or cold. At first, my mom was horrified. She didn’t understand how someone couldn’t feel pain, and she didn’t know how to handle me.

When I started trying to play with the kids in the neighborhood, everyone was terrified of me because of the scars on my face. The skin graft allowed me to function, but it left horrible red scars along my cheeks and my nose. The kids made fun of me and called me names, and honestly... I was crushed...
