Stop-Motion Transformation of Fans Toys FT-30A Maverick. Me: “Fans Toys sure uses a lot of fiddly little linkages!” Fans Toys: “Hold my beer.” As usual for Fans Toys this is a very solid, heavy and beautifully painted figure. Also usual for Fans Toys this figure relies too much on flimsy little transport linkages. Every one one of their designs seems to start its life as a partsformer and only later in the process do they tie the parts together with the linkages. Did I mention how very nice the paint is?

Production Note: I had to use a lot of rigging to get this thing’s floppy parts to hover in mid-air and so a lot of photo editing in post. If you noticed all that hideous artifacting on the nosecone (left side of frame) at one point, that’s because one of my spot lights wandered into frame and I idiotically didn’t notice it for quite a while. I would have been better off just letting it be in frame instead of trying to edit it out.

If you want to follow along, I recommend skipping to the speed run and using the Chrome plugin called "Frame by Frame for YouTube". It turns your , and . keyboard keys into single-frame movement keys. Every step of the transformation is documented in the frames of the video, in what I consider to be the best sequence. With minimal rubbing and minimal parts-parking.
